In the 3rd year, students begin to learn clinical subjects
(Course on Human Diseases) in addition to Fundamentals of Diseases-2
and Road to a Good Physician-3. Spanning the 3rd through 4th
years, this Course is divided into multiple units such as organ-based
diseases like circulatory and respiratory organs and systemic
diseases such as infection. Through these courses students
acquire fundamental knowledge for performing clinical practice
in the 5th year.
In the 4th year, students learn, through practice in Introduction
to Clinical Medicine, how to take a History and Physical of
patients, basic life-saving procedures, and fundamental surgical
techniques.
In addition, toward the end of the 4th year, they go through
rigorous evaluations to ensure they have acquired sufficient
knowledge and techniques necessary for clinical practice. For
this purpose, our School has become one of the active participants
in a nationwide trial of Tests for Common Utilization which
is set to be implemented formally in 2005 (Heisei 17).
The Tests for Common Utilization is a complex set of tests
for medical students to take prior to clinical clerkship for
competency evaluation in knowledge, technique, and attitude
for effective clinical clerkship. It is comprised by CBT (Computer
Based Testing) and OSCE (Objective Structured Clinical Examination).
Students who attain passing scores above certain level in both
CBT (testing of knowledge) and OSCE (testing of techniques
and attitude) are allowed to proceed to the Clinical Practice
(5th year). |
