これまで,ヒトiPS細胞から軸索を持った網膜神経節細胞(視神経細胞)へ分化誘導することはできなかったが,国立成育医療研究センター眼科・視覚科学研究室との共同研究により,機能する軸索を持った視神経細胞を作ることに成功した(Tanaka
et al., 2015).また,マウスiPS細胞およびマウスES細胞からも同様に分化誘導することに成功した(Tanaka et al., 2016).これにより治療法研究の選択肢が増えたことで,今後の創薬や移植による視覚回復治療に近づくと期待される.今後は、分化誘導した視神経細胞の軸索を誘導する薬物を検討する.
